Private copying was one of the key topics at the World Meeting of Audiovisual Authors – Annual Congress of AVACI and FESAAL, which concluded yesterday in Tokyo.

One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the approval of a resolution by the AVACI and FESAAL Assemblies aimed at promoting the introduction of fair private copying remuneration schemes in Latin American countries where such systems are not yet in place. The resolution highlights the importance of ensuring that authors receive fair remuneration for the private copying of their works, and that screenwriters and directors are guaranteed a specific, non-waivable share of this remuneration.

The issue was also explored during a panel on national systems and the different models for collecting and distributing remuneration, featuring Gianluigi Chiodaroli, President of MRIGHTS. In discussing the situation in Italy, Chiodaroli stressed the need for a more balanced allocation of private copying remuneration between the music and audiovisual sectors. In this regard, MRIGHTS reaffirms its commitment to contributing to dialogue with institutions to promote a fairer model and a more transparent and independent system of management—one that recognises the equal value of both sectors and strengthens the protection of audiovisual authors’ rights.

Italian director and screenwriter Giacomo Arrigoni also attended the Congress alongside MRIGHTS. He shared his first-hand experience, bringing the perspective of those who create and produce audiovisual works to the international discussion.
