MRIGHTS initiates legal action against Disney over the rights of dubbing directors
In recent days, we have filed a lawsuit before the Court of Milan against The Walt Disney Company Italia S.r.l. for the failure to recognize and pay the royalties due to dubbing directors.
For some time, we have been engaged in efforts to open a dialogue with the Disney+ platform. Despite our attempts to initiate discussions, the company has refused to negotiate any agreement regarding the payment of what is legally owed to dubbing directors, excluding them from being recognized as co-authors of audiovisual works.
“The decision to take legal action stems from the need to protect the creative work of dubbing directors, which is too often undervalued. These professionals carry out true artistic direction, contributing in a creative and decisive way to the quality of works intended for the Italian audience. Disney’s position is surprising. We already have agreements in place with other major players in the audiovisual sector, confirming the strength of our position,” said Gianluigi Chiodaroli, President of MRIGHTS.
In the claim, we ask the Court to recognize dubbing directors as authors and to guarantee their right to receive the compensation provided by law. We also request that Disney be required to provide all necessary data and to enter into negotiations aimed at determining the remuneration due.
This initiative is part of a broader evolution of the copyright market, with the goal of ensuring greater fairness and transparency in the remuneration of all creative professionals involved in the audiovisual production chain.
